Profile

Overview

Edge Hill University

Edge Hill University’s Ormskirk Campus is a unique and amazing place to study. The 160 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds combine industry standard resources and cutting edge technology to make a truly interactive teaching and learning environment, complemented by 60 acres of sport and leisure facilities, 1,700+ rooms in halls of residence and a welcoming atmosphere where you’ll instantly feel at home.

Edge Hill University is an exceptional place to study for many reasons:

• Shortlisted for UK University of the Year three times in five years (Times Higher Education Awards)
• £180m investment on our award-winning campus over the last decade with a further £200m planned before 2020
• Attractive scholarship packages provide financial support to students throughout their studies
• Guaranteed internships and work placements • Top five in England for students’ personal development (National Student Survey, 2012)
• Top two in the North West for overall student satisfaction (National Student Survey, 2012)
• Best is the North West for Teaching (Sunday Times University Guide, 2012)

Recent developments:

The Arts Centre - the newly developed Arts Centre houses the University’s Performing Arts Department and the Rose and Studio Theatres. Hosting a diverse range of high quality professional productions, including comedy, dance, drama, literature, music and family-friendly shows, designed to entertain students as well as local and regional communities, the extensive refurbishment of this space has led to many improvements to the all-round theatre experience.

The £2m developments include a brand new open-plan foyer and spacious bistro, additional seating and a striking new façade with a wall of glass doors opening up onto a picturesque outdoor amphitheatre and gardens for staging outdoor productions. In addition to the theatre auditoriums, The Arts Centre offers state-of-the-art facilities including dance and drama studios, theatre design and costume workshops and a fully-equipped digital sound studio and design suite.

The Hub - housing retail and dining areas in one place for the first time, the new building marks the central point between the modern Western Campus and the iconic, 1930s main building. There is also brand new accommodation for the Students' Union, with dedicated office space for the management and support teams and societies and student groups. Additional classroom space, open access Macs, PCs and other IT resources, a giant TV screen and various social areas for staff and students to meet make it a vibrant and lively modern building.

Future developments:

Creative Edge - a state-of-the-art building that will provide high-spec suites of industry standard facilities for Media, Film, Animation, Advertising and Computing students.

Features will include TV studios with broadcast capacity and full production capabilities, recording studios, sound-editing suites, a radio studio, animation studios, photographic studio, multimedia laboratory and networking, forensic and computer labs. The new facilities will provide space for teaching, research and collaboration with industry partners. Units will also be available to students and graduates in the early stages for starting their own businesses.

Biology Building - the Biology Department will be extended with a whole floor of brand-new lab space, supporting further work in human biology, together with enhanced facilities for computing and research. These new additions will complement the original purpose-built building which already contains a range of excellent ICT facilities, laboratories, prep rooms and a lecture theatre.

Sports Complex - a new sports complex is currently underway to the east of the Ormskirk Campus. Facilities will include running tracks, rugby, hockey and football pitches, athletics field, netball and tennis courts and a trim trail with exercise stations. A single storey building will accommodate an eight-court sports hall with viewing gallery for basketball, netball, badminton, five-a-side football and general sports use, a 25-metre swimming pool, a 100-station fitness suite, aerobics studio, health suite with sauna and steam rooms, a café and lounge area.

New ecological features and wildlife habitats will be created, including mixed-woodland areas and footpaths linking to Ruff Wood, wildflower meadows, open grassland and a new wildlife pond, and structural screen planting and hedgerow replacement. The whole development will incorporate sustainable drainage and low carbon design and building technologies.

Other facilities:

Our industry standard facilities include a purpose-built sports therapy clinic, TV studio, newsroom, science labs, and impressive IT provision equipped with the latest software. The University library gives you access to thousands of books, journals, online resources and study spaces, ensuring you have the support to succeed.

When it comes to taking time out from your studies, there's a lot to do on campus. If you're serious about sport, you’ll love the 25 acres of modern facilities at Sporting Edge. There's also a great choice of restaurants and cafes on campus, University bar and nightclub, and a range of social seating areas to meet-up, chat and relax. The Venue is the hub of student social life, with DJs, live bands, quizzes and dance nights. The on-site Rose Theatre offers 75 performances a year, showcasing everything from drama and comedy to music, dance and panto, while the Studio Theatre gets in on the act with regular film screenings.
