A partner institute of the University of Essex, Writtle College has a regional, national and international reputation as one of the UK’s leading specialist institutions of higher education (HE), offering a range of full and part-time University of Essex Foundation and Honours degrees and Postgraduate programmes.
Subjects available include design, horticulture, floristry, agriculture, conservation and environment, animal and equine studies, sports and exercise performance and business management. The College is set in its own 220 hectare estate with landscaped gardens, animal unit, equine training and development centre and stud, farm and sports fields. Resources also include a fitness centre, modern science centre, design centre and extensive computer facilities.
There is a lively community atmosphere on campus with halls of residence for up to 400 students. There is an active Students’ Union who regularly arrange social events throughout the year including barbecues, sports nights, and comedy nights. Each year the Union organise a series of balls, including the Summer Ball - the main formal event of the year with big name tribute bands and fairground rides.
Writtle College is well represented in team sports with 10 teams regularly fulfilling fixtures. The teams play in both British University Sports Association (BUSA) leagues and the Southern England Student Sports Association (SESSA) league and cups.
Each HE programme is split into one of the four Schools of Study:

All Writtle College’s degree programmes are validated by the University of Essex, which is ranked among the top ten universities in the UK. The curriculum at Writtle College is developed to ensure that students are equipped with all the skills and knowledge demanded by employers.
