CAREER-READY

Portsmouth wants to get you career-ready. Our graduate employment rates are some of the UK’s best, with 94 per cent in work or study (HESA Graduate Outcomes Survey 2019/20).

Courses are designed to give you skills employers are looking for, often using simulated working environments and professional equipment. Most courses give the option of a paid placement year to get a taste of working life and build up your CV.

We have great links with employers across a wide range of industries. Many give talks on campus, offering you opportunities to make professional connections.

Lots of courses are accredited, approved or recognised by Professional Statutory Regulatory Bodies, certifying you've got specialist knowledge and skills needed for those professions.

Our Careers and Employability Service is free to access from the moment you register with Portsmouth, to five years after you graduate. It offers workshops, online resources, and one-to-ones to help with job seeking and career building.

Portsmouth has also launched a unique approach to placements called Connected Degrees. This is a 3 year course with a 4th year paid placement and courses offer the freedom to choose when you take your placement: either before or after your final year. Portsmouth is the only UK university that offers flexible sandwich placements for undergraduates.

TEACHING EXCELLENCE

We aim to help you grow, so as a graduate you can achieve your goals and make a positive contribution to society. So we’ve created a modern, inclusive, personalised and highly supportive learning environment, with extensive digital resources and access to modern simulation facilities.

You’ll learn from lecturers who are experts in their field, with track records in industry or research. And your course curriculum will bring you close to the latest research and development in professional practice.

FACILITIES

Our campus is always evolving. We have a £400 million plan to ensure our facilities are fit for the future of higher education. It’s all about preparing our students for a competitive global jobs market.

At Portsmouth we aim to give you opportunities to practise skills in simulated professional environments. We have a Centre for Creative and Immersive XR, for exploring virtual, augmented and extended reality. The Future Technology Centre, where students work with industry on advanced projects. Plus a Bloomberg Suite, Motion Capture Studio, Professional Interpreter Training Suite, Replica Courtroom, and simulated GP, pharmacy and hospital environments. We’re also home to Ravelin, one of the most sustainable sports centres in the UK.

STUDENT LIFE

From watersports to festivals, Portsmouth is an inspiring place to live and study. There’s a wealth of lively music, comedy and theatre venues, great independent and designer shopping options for all budgets, fantastic food from around the world – including traditional seaside fish’n’chips – and amazing options for active living.

Social and learning events put on by the Students’ Union help students feel part of a community at the University. The Residence Life team runs a varied social events programme for all new students.

And when you want to take a break from it all, you can find safe, supportive spaces like the campus Chaplaincy (for people of all faiths and none) or simply stop and watch the waves as the sun sets on the Solent. There’s nowhere quite like the UK’s only island city.

SOCIETIES

We have a huge range of student-led societies, covering physical activities, culture, politics, faith, fun and much more. Take the stage, play in an orchestra or even present a TV programme in Victory Studios. Whatever your interests, you will find like-minded students to share them with.

SPORT

Whether you join to get fit, make friends or achieve new goals, you’re welcome at Ravelin Sports Centre. Offering the latest facilities, a range of fitness classes and courses, personal training and a raft of sports clubs to join, Ravelin has something for everyone.

There’s an 8 lane, 25 metre swimming pool, 175 station gym, 8 court sports hall, multi-purpose studios, squash courts, ski simulator, climbing wall and bouldering. The whole Centre is designed to the highest sustainability credentials.

PORTSMOUTH

Portsmouth has lively beaches and vivid street art. It’s rich in naval history and buzzing with indie start-ups. It’s a city alive with possibility.

Within a 10 minute walk from campus, you’ll find miles of beaches with two original Victorian piers. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Major music, theatre and comedy venues. And Gunwharf Quays designer outlet with bars, restaurants, cinema and bowling alley. No wonder YouGov surveys in 2022 found Portsmouth to be one of the UK’s top 10 most popular cities.

Getting to and from Portsmouth couldn’t be easier. There are three stations close to our campus and popular residential areas. We’re well connected to London and other major cities by train and coach.

Portsmouth is a bike friendly city - compact and mostly flat, so it’s easy and safe to cycle or simply walk around. We have a free, dedicated University bus service for students and staff during term time. This loops around our campus and popular areas where students live.
