Why Study Sociology and Social Policy?

Sociology is the study of the social nature of human existence, how societies are organised and how we experience life. As people we are always involved in social relationships with one another. By studying Sociology, you’ll be asking challenging and exciting questions such as:

  • How does your occupation still affect how long you will live?
  • How do gender, religion and ethnic background affect your chances in life?
  • Is conflict inevitable?
  • What gives you ‘identity’?
  • Where do beliefs and values come from?
  • Does the media affect our personal lifestyle choices?
  • Has technology outrun our capacity to control it?

You can also study Sociology through the medium of Welsh on the BA Cymdeithaseg gyda Pholisi Cymdeithasol.

Social Policy is about the world in which we live and how our needs for security and welfare are met. You will look at it from a global perspective ranging from its roots in Victorian Britain to the challenges of world poverty today. You’ll be looking for answers to questions such as:

  • How do we address poverty and inequality?
  • What are the solutions to the housing crisis?
  • What will be the impact of climate change on social policies?
  • What is the role of the State, voluntary and private sector organisations and civil society in meeting Social Policy goals?

There are so many support services available to help us students as and when we need it. That's on top of the excellent support we receive from our lecturers and personal tutors.
