Departments open

Students will have five placement days across our state-of-the-art clinical, animal handling and laboratory facilities. We hope to include the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals, Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital, Equine Referral Hospital as well as non-clinal environments such as Boltons Park Farm, Pathology and Microbiology Labs. Typically, these placements equate to 25-35 hours of work experience (a mixture of clinical and non-clinical) that can be used when applying to vet school. NB: we have a requirement that work experience must be completed 18 months prior to the application deadline, therefore for students attending outside of this time frame the practical experience won't count towards an application to the RVC.

Additional info

In addition to placements, students will undertake 5 academic days of didactic and practical teaching, such as lectures, clinical case studies, animal behaviour workshops, clinical skills activities and observe a dissection. Throughout these sessions students will meet academic staff and support staff, receive valuable insight on the application process and how best to make themselves the best applicant they can. Students will also be a allocated a student mentor so they can find out what life as an RVC student is really like. To support the comprehensive academic/placement schedule there is also a full social programme running in the evenings and weekend; to facilitate the integration of summer school students as well as providing arenas to develop skills and attributes. In past summer schools this has included; exploring London's famous landmarks, visiting ZSL London Zoo, going to a West End show, competing in an RVC Master Chef competition, games and other experiences with animals. Students will be based at our Hawkshead Campus, staying at our College Close student accommodation. Each student will be allocated their own private, lockable bedroom in a mixed-gender** house with shared bathrooms and a fully-equipped kitchen. *The RVC may (at its sole discretion) change the format of the event at any time, whether or not due to a Force Majeure Event, in each case without liability. **Subject to demographic of successful applicants.

Profile

Overview

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) is one of the world’s leading specialist veterinary institutions, renowned for pioneering approaches to teaching, research and cutting edge clinical provision. It is the largest, oldest and only independent veterinary school in the UK. Founded in Camden Town in 1791, it was the driving force behind the establishment of the nation’s veterinary profession.Since then, the College has been at the forefront of theory and practice in the veterinary and allied sciences. The RVC has been ranked as number one veterinary school in the UK and Europe through the prestigious QS World University Rankings 2020.

Spread over two campuses, the College provides approximately 1,600 undergraduate students with the best of both worlds in terms of student experience. Its Camden Campus offers the buzz of being based in the heart of the nation’s capital; while in contrast, the 575 acre Hawkshead site near Potters Bar in Hertfordshire offers a more rural experience. Throughout both campuses, students enjoy a friendly, supportive environment with state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and learning.

The RVC currently offers BSc programmes in Biological Sciences, Animal Biology, Behaviour, Welfare and Ethics, and Bioveterinary Sciences, all with the option of a Certificate in Work-based learning and Research. These are recognised and accredited by the Royal Society of Biology respectively. Our MSci options in Biological Sciences, Bioveterinary Sciences, Applied Biological Research, Applied Bioveterinary Research and Wild Animal Biology, involves an extensive and in-depth research project in the fourth year.

We offer the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVetMed) with an option of an intercalated year, Graduate Accelerated BVetMed, Veterinary Gateway, and Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc). All these degrees are fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association, and is accredited by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education. Our courses have also received full recognition by the UK’s Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and we have a reciprocal arrangement between the RCVS and the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council Inc.

On offer at undergraduate level are the FdSc and BSc in Veterinary Nursing, both of which are fully accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Accreditation Committee for Veterinary Nurse Education.
