Our Accounting, Finance & Economics degrees all share a common first year, so you’re free to make an informed decision after really getting to know the detail of the course – and we’re accredited by some of the biggest names in the business.
Our courses are accredited by the relevant professional bodies – the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). As well as adding relevance to your qualification, graduates may also benefit from exemptions from some further professional qualifications. Every student has the option of taking a minimum 30-week work placement and we have links with an impressive list of companies who often return to us to take on our placement students.
As a student, you have excellent opportunities to develop your fieldwork skills on real and simulated forensic and archaeological sites, as well as visiting some of the South West’s most prestigious historical sites, such as Stonehenge, Avebury and Corfe Castle. Our forensic science students have access to the Crime Scene Training Facility and external facilities such as SafeWise, where you can participate in large-scale simulated crime scenes and disaster scenarios, while archaeological students can participate in a 25-day field school. This is an unrivalled opportunity to work on a large-scale archaeological excavation and hone your practical skills.
With accreditations from bodies including AACSB, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Chartered Management Institute, our range of courses mean business.
We have been teaching courses in this area for over 35 years and have an excellent reputation.
You’ll have more than just a classroom-based experience. If you join us for an undergraduate course, you’ll be offered the opportunity of a 30-week work placement, which gives you a head start after graduation having gained real work experience to add to your CV. Your placement will also give you the opportunity to experience the world of business, as well as networking and developing your own contacts.
Our graduates now work in sought after companies, such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Intel, KPMG, IBM, Barclays and UK Government departments in areas of law, accountancy, management, marketing and many more.
Study with us, and you’ll benefit from attending the BFX Festival every year. It’s a chance to join talks and masterclasses delivered by some of the best creative minds in the industry.
Our Computer Animation degrees are delivered by The National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA) in the Faculty of Media & Communication, while our Games degrees are delivered by the Department of Creative Technology in the Faculty of Science & Technology. Our BA (Hons) Digital Creative Industries is delivered jointly between these two award-winning faculties. We’re very proud of our graduates, who have gone on to do incredible things. Several of our former students have won Oscars and BAFTAs for their work on a range of feature films including Gravity, Interstellar and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
As a games developer, your knowledge and skills will allow you to follow the success of many of our graduates who have gone on to work for award-winning games companies such as Microsoft Rare, Electronic Arts, Jagex or King.
When it comes to success in the movies, BU graduates have worked on films such as Blade Runner 2049, The Avengers, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Dunkirk and The Jungle Book – who knows where your degree could take you?
Forensic computing, IT, software development and networks are all specialisations our students can chose from following a common first year. Using industry standard systems in our open access computer labs, our students are uniquely placed to put their theory into practice when they spend a year in industry as part of their course. Firms that offer placements to our students include IBM, British Aerospace, Intel, Google and Microsoft.
If you study a computing course, you’ll have access to facilities including:
- Cyber security lab
- Computer networks lab
- Development lab
Many of our courses are accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS) and you will be able to achieve Chartered IT Professional status from the BCS with one year of further learning after you graduate.
Design & Engineering students study in our modern laboratories, which are equipped with state-of-the-art rapid prototyping and manufacturing facilities.
Final year students create their own working prototypes which they exhibit at our annual Festival of Design & Technology and at New Designers, giving them the opportunity to exhibit their work in front of local and national industry visitors, including Dyson and Jaguar.
Our courses have consistently high employment rates, so you know that what you learn in your lectures has real-world applications.
A key feature of the film, TV and media courses is their cross-collaborative nature, with students from different disciplines working together as a team to bring each other’s ideas to life. As well as preparing you for a career working alongside other disciplines, this early exposure to collaboration can help to inform and refine the way you work within your own discipline.
You’ll have the opportunity to undertake a work placement on every course, making use of our extensive network of organisations that offer placements to our students. These include the BBC, Working Title, Endemol, IBM and Disney. You’ll also benefit from access to industry-standard facilities, including two multi-camera TV studios equipped with 4K (Ultra High Definition) cameras, a film studio and sound stage, a cinema, edit suites, sound suites, and fully equipped recording studios.
Practical placements are an integral part of all our health and social care courses, giving you the skills needed in the workplace. Our practice simulation suites mirror both clinical and community workplace settings and provide a safe environment for you to practise your skills before heading out on placement. You’ll be learning skills in some of our specialist facilities:
- Patient nursing wards
- Operating theatre
- Physiotherapy clinic
- Exercise science laboratory
- Maternity suite
- Community settings
Many courses are accredited/ endorsed by professional bodies such as the Association for Nutrition, British Association Sport & Exercise Sciences, Health Professions Council and the Nursing & Midwifery Council.
This diverse subject area will give you the chance to expand your understanding of human identity and behaviour, together with social interaction and institutions across different contexts – sociological, historical and political. Our history and politics courses are delivered by the Faculty of Media & Communication, where a media-driven environment provides the courses with a fresh perspective.
Our sociology, anthropology and criminology courses are delivered by the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences, where you will learn from research-active social scientists in fields including society and social formation, anthropology, criminology, cultural diversity and social welfare.
Our LLB courses are Qualifying Law Degrees and are accredited by the professional bodies, Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and Joint Academic Stage Board (JASB).
We also offer specialist Law degrees in areas such as Business Law and Entertainment Law.
We want to help you become a well-rounded legal professional, so you’ll be given the opportunity to take a 30-week placement, which greatly enhances employment prospects post-graduation.
We have a multi-disciplinary team of biologists, ecologists, geographers and environmental scientists, with wide-ranging specialist interests. These include human evolution, biology and genetics, microbiology, sustainability, paleoecology, remote sensing, coastal and terrestrial geomorphology, and the ecology of plants and animals within terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments. In a biodiversity hotspot, close to iconic environments such as the New Forest National Park, Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, we’re ideally situated to study and research life and environmental sciences.
Many of our courses include a short placement as part of your degree, but there is also the option to extend your degree by a year and undertake a minimum 30-week placement, ensuring you graduate with a wealth of experience that will help you get ahead in the competitive jobs market.

Our courses in Biomedical and Medical Sciences will provide you with a solid underpinning in subjects such as anatomy, physiology, genetics, biochemistry and cell biology. As new courses, we had the advantage of designing degrees with subjects and pathways that allow you to tailor your personalised experience here at BU. With significant investment in medical sciences, staff and new lab facilities, our biomedical sciences course is an exciting broad based degree, whilst our medical sciences course gives you the opportunity to include either psychology, engineering or computational units.

We are accredited by the Club Managers Association of Europe (CMAE), a partnership that offers superb career and placement links, guest speakers and fantastic networking opportunities to our students. We are a world leader in tourism research and offer courses in events, hospitality, leisure, retail, sport and tourism. Our academics also author leading textbooks in this sector. In the most recent REF (2014), we ranked number one in the UK for Tourism, thanks to our internationally recognised research. We’re ideally placed in a major tourism destination, offering many opportunities for our students.
We have been offering national and international placements for our students for many years, and have a wealth of contacts within the industry, resulting in over 500 placement opportunities per year for our students.
