Business & Management
We have been teaching courses in this area for over 35 years and have an excellent reputation.
You’ll have more than just a classroom-based experience. If you join us for an undergraduate course, you’ll be offered the opportunity of a 30-week work placement, which gives you a head start after graduation having gained real work experience to add to your CV. Your placement will also give you the opportunity to experience the world of business, as well as networking and developing your own contacts.
Our graduates now work in sought after companies, such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Intel, KPMG, IBM, Barclays and UK Government departments in areas of law, accountancy, management, marketing and many more.
Health & Social Care
Practical placements are an integral part of all our health and social care courses, giving you the skills needed in the workplace. Our practice simulation suites mirror both clinical and community workplace settings and provide a safe environment for you to practise your skills before heading out on placement. You’ll be learning skills in some of our specialist facilities:
- Patient nursing wards
Exercise science laboratory
Many courses are accredited/ endorsed by professional bodies such as the Association for Nutrition, British Association Sport & Exercise Sciences, Health Professions Council and the Nursing & Midwifery Council.
Our LLB courses are Qualifying Law Degrees and are accredited by the professional bodies, Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and Joint Academic Stage Board (JASB).
We also offer specialist Law degrees in areas such as Business Law and Entertainment Law.
We want to help you become a well-rounded legal professional, so you’ll be given the opportunity to take a 30-week placement, which greatly enhances employment prospects post-graduation.
Media & Communications
BU is well known in the media industry for its skilled media graduates who hit the ground running.
Our students use state-of-the-art equipment simulating real working environments, including:
• Sony HD TV studio
• Editing suites
• Journalism newsrooms
• Recording studios.
We are the only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice in the UK, a registered Skillset Media Academy, and boast numerous accreditations from top industry bodies.
All our undergraduate students will have the chance to complete a work placement, giving you valuable experience of the world of work before you graduate.
We have an excellent graduate employment record, with some of our former students going on to work for companies such as ITV, BMW, Time Out, BBC, Pixar and Sky.
We offer a wide variety of undergraduate science courses including archaeology, forensics, biological and environmental sciences and psychology. Our courses are supported by facilities such as:
- Human osteology and animal bone laboratories
Crime Scene Training Facility
DNA and Microscopy laboratories
Biodome for environmental research
Psychology testing suite
Many of our science courses are recognised by relevant industry bodies, and we are renowned for the practical emphasis of our science-based courses.
Every year, we run a 25-day field school known as The Big Dig. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on a large-scale excavation and hone your practical skills.
We make extensive use of Bournemouth’s unrivalled local environment. We’re surrounded by a fantastic variety of habitats and some of Britain’s most iconic archaeological landscapes. We also have excellent links with conservation, archaeological and ecological projects all around the world, giving you the chance to broaden your horizons and join initiatives across the globe.
Tourism, Sport, Events, Retail & Hospitality
We are a world leader in tourism research and offer courses in events, hospitality, leisure, retail, sport and tourism. Our academics also author leading textbooks in this sector. In the most recent REF (2014), we ranked number one in the UK for Tourism, thanks to our internationally recognised research. We’re ideally placed in a major tourism destination, offering many opportunities for our students.
We have been offering national and international placements for our students for many years, and have a wealth of contacts within the industry, resulting in over 500 placement opportunities per year for our students.
Design and Engineering
Design & Engineering students study in our modern laboratories, which are equipped with state-of-the-art rapid prototyping and manufacturing facilities.
Final year students create their own working prototypes which they exhibit at our annual Festival of Design & Technology and at New Designers, giving them the opportunity to exhibit their work in front of local and national industry visitors, including Dyson and Jaguar.
Our courses have consistently high employment rates, so you know that what you learn in your lectures has real-world applications.
We offer a range of courses in technology - from electronics, music and audio to animation.
We’re proud to host the National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA) within our Faculty of Media & Communication and we’re ranked within the top 20 places to study animation in the world. Our graduates have become BAFTA and Oscar award winners, and have been working on blockbuster films such as Interstellar, Gravity, Avatar, Harry Potter, Lord of Rings and Pixar animations for the last 20 years.
Forensic computing, IT, software development and networks are all specialisations our students can chose from following a common first year. Using industry standard systems in our open access computer labs, our students are uniquely placed to put their theory into practice when they spend a year in industry as part of their course. Firms that offer placements to our students include IBM, British Aerospace, Intel, Google and Microsoft.
If you study a computing course, you’ll have access to facilities including:
- Cyber security lab
- Computer networks lab
- Development lab
Many of our courses are accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS) and you will be able to achieve Chartered IT Professional status from the BCS with one year of further learning after you graduate.
