Additional info

Our Open House events are designed to allow prospective students, parents, teachers and careers advisors the chance to tour one or both campuses on the same day. Each Campus Tour will include the majority of our academic and social facilities, at this time it is a requirement to wear face coverings in our clinical environments. Sessions at 10am, 11am and 12noon also feature an Introductory Welcome Talk; the talks at Camden Campus and Hawkshead Campus are identical. As most of the teaching takes place in Camden for our Biological Sciences courses we recommend visiting this campus, but the BSc Animal Behaviour, Welfare and Ethics course is based at Hawkshead for the final year so if you are interested in this course you may wish to visit Hawkshead too. We recommend visiting Hawkshead only if you are considering studying Veterinary Nursing (there is no teaching for this course in Camden). While for Veterinary Medicine (BVetMed) both campuses are recommended as the first two years of the 5 year programme are spent at our Camden Campus and the final three years are spent at Hawkshead.

Profile

Overview

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) is one of the world’s leading specialist veterinary institutions, renowned for pioneering approaches to teaching, research and cutting edge clinical provision. It is the largest, oldest and only independent veterinary school in the UK. Founded in Camden Town in 1791, it was the driving force behind the establishment of the nation’s veterinary profession.Since then, the College has been at the forefront of theory and practice in the veterinary and allied sciences. The RVC has been ranked as number one veterinary school in the UK and Europe through the prestigious QS World University Rankings 2020.

Spread over two campuses, the College provides approximately 1,600 undergraduate students with the best of both worlds in terms of student experience. Its Camden Campus offers the buzz of being based in the heart of the nation’s capital; while in contrast, the 575 acre Hawkshead site near Potters Bar in Hertfordshire offers a more rural experience. Throughout both campuses, students enjoy a friendly, supportive environment with state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and learning.

The RVC currently offers BSc programmes in Biological Sciences, Animal Biology, Behaviour, Welfare and Ethics, and Bioveterinary Sciences, all with the option of a Certificate in Work-based learning and Research. These are recognised and accredited by the Royal Society of Biology respectively. Our MSci options in Biological Sciences, Bioveterinary Sciences, Applied Biological Research, Applied Bioveterinary Research and Wild Animal Biology, involves an extensive and in-depth research project in the fourth year.

We offer the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVetMed) with an option of an intercalated year, Graduate Accelerated BVetMed, Veterinary Gateway, and Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc). All these degrees are fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association, and is accredited by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education. Our courses have also received full recognition by the UK’s Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and we have a reciprocal arrangement between the RCVS and the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council Inc.

On offer at undergraduate level are the FdSc and BSc in Veterinary Nursing, both of which are fully accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Accreditation Committee for Veterinary Nurse Education.
