The University of the Year 2018
The University of Essex is proud to have been voted the Times Higher Education Awards 2018 University of the Year. Identified as staying true to its progressive roots, Essex continues to be a “home for students who want to make the world a better place.” So, if you’re an out-of-the-box thinker, a challenger of the status quo, welcome home.
Essex is top 25 for research quality UK in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019. In 2017, we were awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for outstanding social science research. We celebrated by building a new £13 million STEM centre that was unveiled in 2018.
Many of our departments enjoy world-renowned reputations. As a result, our teaching is informed by leading world-class academics and rated Gold in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework.
We’re based in three locations, from the beautiful parkland of Colchester campus, the bustling home of our award-winning Acting School in Loughton, to the seaside location of our Southend campus. There are excellent transport links to London and continental Europe via local airports.
Essex is one of the UK’s most internationally diverse universities with students from over 140 countries and we’ve been named 21st for international outlook in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020.
Our students form a lively and supportive 15,000-strong community. Our staff provide each student with one-to-one guidance throughout their studies. As a result, Essex was ranked in the top 15 in England for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey (2019, mainstream universities).
