Our flexible curriculum gives you the freedom to shape your studies. Many courses offer options to study abroad or gain experience through a year in industry. You can also choose a joint honours degree to explore more than one subject. We’re also one of a few UK universities where, in many subjects, you can study additional minor subjects alongside your major, allowing you to broaden your learning experience.

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), 91% of Lancaster’s overall research was rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

Our work makes a real-world impact, from discovering new climate extremes in the Amazon rainforest to researching the ways interactive games can boost online fraud awareness. We even received the nation's highest education honour, a Queen Elizabeth Prize for Education (2024-26), for the creation and development of core technology for the BBC micro:bit.

We've been ranked 21st out of 157 institutions in the REF rankings published by Times Higher Education. This places us above eight Russell Group universities in terms of research quality.
